Youth Challenge Leadership Model

Youth Challenge prides itself on a positive atmosphere with no negative influences. This is why our Resident Handbook states:

"All members of the YC staff will treat you firmly and fairly. You will not be "put down" and no one will use profanity in your presence. You will not be teased and joked with in a negative manner. Staff will not speak about negative assumptions about your ability to lead a positive life. You will be treated with respect at all times. If staff violates these rules, it is your responsibility to make it known to the supervisors of YC as soon as possible."

The novelty of the Youth Challenge setting is two fold. One is that staff are often loud. However, the content is positive and the intensity is maintained only as long as is necessary for the youth to respond appropriately.

"Youth have been put down at home and in the streets and do not need to hear the negativity anymore."

This is a part of the novelty of the setting and can be very closely compared to the techniques that a good coach would use to get the attention of his players while encouraging them to follow through with the task.

Youth Challenge accomplishes the extremely difficult task of providing intense structure combined with the compassion of Jesus Christ. This is the secret to Youth Challenge's success.
